MOTORCYCLES - A LIFELONG HOBBY

Home | The latest is a 2001 Harley-Davidson
Sportster (pic above). There's no long story to this one. I
saved the money, went to a few dealers, and bought it. It has 3100
miles.
Although most of my friends and co-workers know I have motorcycles, many were surprised to learn of my plans to buy a new motorcycle in Salt Lake City, Utah, and drive it back to Virginia. Several people were sincerely concerned for my safety, and I thank them for that. I assured them I am an expert motorcyclist, adventurous, but not foolhardy. These pages tell the story of buying my new Honda XR650L and the resulting terrific motorcycle trip from Salt Lake City, my background in motorcycling, and, finally, acquiring a Harley-Davidson Sportster. I've been a motorcycle enthusiast since 1952, and this early interest has stayed with me all my life. I've owned 11 motorcycles in all, beginning in 1955. The early motorcycles were all small and well-used (and therefore inexpensive), but they gave me the opportunity to begin in the sport of motorcycling in a relatively safe and affordable way. In addition, they necessarily provided me experience to become an expert mechanic. I obtained my first motorcycle license in Massachusetts in 1957. My distinct preference for big singles comes from my learning experience. As an adult I've owned five Hondas, two Yamahas, and the recently bought Harley-Davidson Sportster. If you have any questions or comments, please send e-mail to Scirockit@aol.com. Many thanks to my son and his roommate for finding the XR650L and for hosting my wife and me for a wonderful visit in Salt Lake City. Update: The XR650L now has about 37,000 miles. It still runs great and feels great. See Buying the Honda XR650L for the latest. And check out Rolling Thunder XV and Day One of the trip, too. |
