FINALLY, A HARLEY-DAVIDSON

August 2004

I have been saying for many years that someday I would own another Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a large one, not a little two-stroke (see Early Motorcycles).  I have long thought about a Sportster because I didn't want to make too much of a jump in weight.  The heaviest motorcycle I've owned is the Honda Super Hawk.  Friends advised me to get a 1200cc motor, not an 883cc, especially after riding the 650cc Honda.  So that narrowed it down a bit.

I have always loved the orange and black H-D racing colors.  Unfortunately, H-D doesn't have that color scheme this year or next.  In mid-July I paid a visit to a couple of dealers to get familiar with specifications and prices.  In early August I saw a pretty orange and black 1200cc Sportster at Patriot Harley-Davidson in Fairfax, Virginia.  I went back the next week and found a woman buying it.  The following week, to my amazement, there was another orange and black 1200 with only 3100 miles on it.  Resolved not to let this one get away, I put down $1000.00.  After a trip to the bank, I concluded the buy the next evening and rode it home in the rain.

At the time I'm writing this I have put about 200 miles on the Sportster, and I am still getting used to it.  People ask if it's better than the Honda.  My answer is that it's not a matter of better or worse, but it's definitely different.  Sort of like skiing and snowboarding - two completely different dimensions of the same idea, and both very enjoyable.
